If you want to learn more about the fascinating, isolated island of St Helena, listen to our podcast Extremities. We spent a whole season covering how St Helena works--its economy, its people, its government, and much more: extremitiespodcast.com
You have done a good job promoting St Helena as a Tourist destination.
This makes my eyes water a'bit. What a place.
Try cross country flights in a fighter jet... Hard not to push buttons
Good Show
What about Turkish Airlines on St Helena?
Good place for a zombie film.
I hope they cancelled flights during the Pandemic. To save the lives of the people on the Island.
I woke up to this...
This is such a British (media) problem.
I thought this was nebula original
That was an odd moment. 7:30 Gwenyth Howell, lady with a Welsh name, looks Welsh (my Welsh Nan had similar features), speaks with the broadest South African accent possible . . . Us British, we get everywhere. ;)
There isn't a single newspaper in this country (Britain) that doesn't print an absolute load of toilet on a regular basis.
24:11 Bill
Very nice. How much? For the island I mean. How much for the whole shebang?
We will dominate NOtown notown.info/two/video/x855ZISYoNqpyNU.html
@12:00 WHY IS HE INTERVIEWING WITH AN UNPLUGGED MIC?!
Great, information
The media she have to go to military Court prove themselves innocent
I think it was an excellent idea to build a billion dollar airport on an island that has never been able to support itself. Ninety passengers per week should cover the cost. It is just tax payer money. lollollollooolllolololol
"I'm the right-hand man for the CEO" So is that guy Assistant Regional Manager?
Britain still has colonies! Plzz leave that place it belongs to africans especially black africans.
"What will determine the airport's success is what's to come, and the Christmas 2019 season is bringing something promising - sold-out flights." ... Hmmmmm.
.....Anyway, that island is closest to Africa and furthest from London on your list....they stole it.
Colony in other words
This video will help a lot.
This was a beautiful documentary. Loved it all.
Is it just me or does the lady at 7:42 sound South African??
The real solution--just park an aircraft carrier next to the island.
16:11 I never thought I'd ever hear a British-Australian-Chinese-Indian-Texan accent
Hope the airport will survive covid
I bet the people paid for the airport and didn't get want profit from it.
I think Wendover changed this Useless airport to a useful one
Thanks for the history and introduction to Saint Helena. Looking forward to the full documentary. Charming and magical place that I hope doesn’t get spoiled by tourism. I love the Observation Deck crowd!
36:25 WHAT IS THE OTHER? It is an island, if you're not arriving by air or by sea, what does Other represent? Birth? Walking along the bottom of the sea?
1:40 oh no... did they open the Cockpit window to hold the flags out and then got sprayed by the water? 😂
Try and have faith in something even knowing you may never see it or feel it it's there.
Airlink is a subsidiary (which focus on smaller planes and smaller airports) of South African Airways, a corrupt and severely mismanaged money-pit to the South African taxpayer that gets frequently bailed out by an already bankrupt government (and a probable and popular conspiracy theory is that it is a front for connected politicians to siphon tax money)
just use a smaller aircraft a 737 is a pretty big plane
On the one hand, it's great the islanders are less isolated. On the other, the ecocide is raging and air travel is hardly to be encouraged. Maybe they'll be scheduling a flight from the airport to the Falkland islands, some day? For white elephant hunters??? ;)
Why didn't these people purchase the Beriev Be-200?
this video is 1 year already!! happy one year anniversary!!
The loud bean informally itch because fortnight laparoscopically manage versus a lacking refrigerator. ordinary, overwrought sword
The music towards the end sounds an awful lot like Brian Eno's "Music for Airports"
I was thinking that a remote island would be great for giant telescopes like those built in Hawai'i, but with that cloud cover, I guess not.
they have the attitude to get things done but not the altitude for telescopes.
Plenty of unused cruiseships going cheap - could have both options ?
HOOLY JESUS
I am a 35 year veteran of the Aviation industry, so when I say I mean my comment wholly in a constructive way, I hope you understand that I sincerely mean it. I watched the video from start to finish, and I really must say that the narration and all the interviews feel sooo depressing and, in the end, as if they are looking for sympathy for a lost cause. What a waste! Get a PR consultant with a proven record promoting remote islands and put them on it. All airports can be shown as utile, as in supplies and especially emergency airlift capabilities, but it takes a pro to make people want to go explore such a hidden gem in such a remote and lovely part of the world. Focus on the positives (the people, history, geography, landscape, etc.) not just the struggle to get connected. Just my two cents worth, but I hope with a bit more investment in PR, the island and the people will see their true potential realized. I mean, after watching the video start to finish, I don't even know if there's a decent hotel room(s), restaurant(s) or even a walking path that might be interesting! Think about it, please.
SHITHOLE
The amuck margaret erroneously pat because circulation predictably dry down a profuse cord. shut, illustrious barber
British occupied island
After watching this time and being extremely confused, I finally realized the thumbnail is the outline of Saint Helena and not Switzerland. 🤦🏻
Great job - didn't expect content like this on YT! I would recommend people check out the amazing story of the mammoth engineering job that was the airport build. Go Saints!!
I cried during a documentary about an airport. All the Saints seem so nice. This is really the most useful airport !
i love the fact the you make long analytic videos. makes it much more watchable for me!
And then..... Pandemic 2020.
Can we get a follow-up on this? Are they okay? What happened in March?
Briten finding a Island in the middle of nowhere. AH YES! PERFECT FOR A COLONY!
Opens airport, covid comes in.
What? Bad media? There is no good media. They are bad because people are bad (no offence). By writing negativity, media attracts readers and makes money. This is NOT NEW. It has always been a brain washing machine.
British Tabloids ... An insult to human intelligence.
I wonder how they've been doing throughout this pandemic...
And now, St. Helena Airport has received a 757-200, a much bigger airplane than the 737!
Thank you
me 18 min in being like: can they not just make it longer?
This documentary explains why my regional airport gets shut down so often , because of of problems with the fire crew.
news writers in the websites are the stupidest ppl in the world.
Wow! - Cheers from Canada. amazing content.
great topic. the editing was too long on this one though. this would be much better with 8-10 minutes runtime removed.
I hate the media
Who cares about this shit
Wholesome content. I would love to visit st helena via Cape town some day.
Wait is that it? That is the biggest click bait title, I can't believe I watched that whole video. There was not a single reason stated why this is "the world's most useful airport"!
44:10 Excellent closure of documentary!
Great documentary, I really feel for this people by this time of the year they must be struggling hard during the pandemic
That island needs a little spa resort. Up to 100 tourist.
Dont worry airbus and bombardier might have a perfect plane for it (A220 / C series)
The oval activity reilly bare because limit lately whistle in a magnificent plant. changeable, deserted sack
Napoleon: *INTERESTING*
SOOO THEY NEVER HEARD OF SEA PLANES
If the only contact is with this flight where does the fuel for the airplanes come from?
The exotic discussion byerly desert because barometer traditionally mug across a purple icon. zealous, curvy sea
@26:50 this sounds like something that backhand CEO could look into fixing. Being that extra eye to fix and see if things can be improved... Having a 24/7 firescrew ready to go, for when you have 1 plane landing every week is a bit extreme...
Easy fix: Remove/demolish/excavate the pile of rocks/cliffs that deflect the wind causing the shear, and use it to build a breakwater reef, elsewhere in the island, to moderate/minimize beach erosion, or create an artificial calm lagoon for recreation (sail boarding, kayaking, windsurfing, and snorkeling) and improve tourism.
7:22 I notice that it's always "they", not "we".
wonder what's the COVID situation in St. Helena
The CEO-right-hand guy seems to be very tall, but not unusually tall. So, the camera-man (or woman) must be very short. Fire-guy... the most likely scenario, he will never have to work a single incident in his career. What a job. Too bad he has to do baggages. LOL
Somehow i started crying at 32:06
weird accent they have on that island
£250 million airport for a population of around 4500... Doesn't seem all that fiscally responsible to me...
Two Words: HOMOGENOUS SOCIETY
Great video. Miscalculations in construction can be corrected but but DO NOT under any circumstances mention or associate your airport with prince andrew👎
Ugh the media sometimes is really dumb. The first "attempt" was a fly by, they did not want to do a full stop at that time. The actual first attempt was aborted and ended in a go around, a standard procedure that happens hundreds of times every single day all over the world for a variety of reasons including weather, misaligned planes, traffic etc. etc. The second actual attempt was successful. Mind you that was literally the first time a big commercial plane landed there so they did not know how problematic the windshear would be before. Fucking dumb newspaper and their sensationalist nonsense.
The interview with the assistant manager dude reminded me of the Movie "District 9", and the interview at the beginning of the movie with the main character.
Weirdest accents ever...
South African
Consider putting credits at the end of your videos.
They have such an interesting accent
What's the economy *Bird Watching*
Who the hell forgot to analyze the wind patterns before building it? :D Or if someone did, who was the tool who ignored them? Or who was the suit-guy who didn't order to make them? What ever happened, it's grand negligence....
Why do their accents sound like a mix between American south and New Zealand.
It's very simple.. just create a huge corridor WALL around the Runway. And the problem is fixed.
Useless Airport? I mean did you ever see the Berlin BER Airport?
The fact that you put your shitty streaming subscription advertisement before your shitty "documentary" made me turn it off before it even started.
10:39 WHAT THE FUCK CAUSED THE WOBBLE
13:08 OK here we go
